When Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano both left Milan, the attack of the club was left in the hands of Alexandre Pato, Robinho, Bojan and Pazzini. However, no one would have expected young Stephan El Shaarawy to be to be sitting as Milan’s top-scorer this season.

In fact, El Shaarawy is not only Milan top-scorer but he’s the Serie A topscorer as well. His 14 strikes place him ahead of Cavani, Klose and Di Natale; all of whom are renowned for their goals. Additionally, the attacker has three assists to his name; the young Egyptian-born Italian is responsible for a little over 50% of the Rossoneri’s goals this year. His new role in the team has created more freedom on the field, allowing the attacker to flourish, without playing in the shadow of somebody else.

It was last summer that El Shaarawy signed for Milan from Genoa for a fee around €10m. It indeed looked a hefty sum for a 19-year-old who had previously only made one league appearance and mostly featured in Serie B during a loan spell at Padova. But with Italian clubs not so flush with cash and lowering their wage bills in recent years, El Shaarawy has become one of the many Italian youngsters benefiting of more playing time.

The most interesting thing about this trade to me is that if it works Daryl Morey will look like a genius, next summer. Because it’s always about the offseason now. Sure, the Rockets will get to the playoffs, Harden will knock on the door of being an all-star, and the back court is insane, but this was also about attracting bigger stars. The team will try for Howard again, especially if the Lakers don’t win the ‘chip this year. They have young talent (Morris, Patterson, Motiejūnas) that they can move. It could work. And even then, if they can’t get him, the talent can be developed and weeded out, to make a contender over time. All in all, Harden makes this team better a lot quicker than the team altogether expected.

Neymar just played his 200th match for Santos against Atletico Minero. He’s still only 20 years old. While reputations can crush some young players, Neymar has only thrived under Pelé’s blessing, scoring yet another ~~absurd~~ trademark goal. (He also pulled this off in the presence of Ronaldinho.) The lush European fields are awaiting the Brazilian phenom, but for now the young man is simply enjoying the moment. Although some purists may not be impressed with the drama Neymar brings to the game, no one can deny that he’s the epitome of an entertainer. And are you not entertained? [posted by EB]
